Discover The Magic Of Thailand With Becky
Have you ever dreamed of exploring a destination where golden temples glisten in the sun, turquoise waters lap against pristine beaches, and vibrant markets overflow with exotic sights, sounds, and smells? Thailand is a country that truly has it all, and I want to share my love for this incredible place with you.
I’m Becky, one of The Travel Village’s expert travel agents, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit Thailand twice, first for an entire month and then again for two weeks. Even after spending so much time there, I still feel like I have barely scratched the surface. Every trip offers something new, and that’s part of what makes Thailand so special. No matter how many times you visit, there is always something different to discover.
Why Thailand Should Be on Your Travel List
One of the things that makes Thailand so unforgettable is its remarkable contrasts. From bustling cities to tranquil islands, from lush jungles to centuries old temples, the country offers an extraordinary variety of experiences. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, culture, or cuisine, Thailand delivers in ways that continually surprise and delight.
But beyond the breathtaking landscapes and incredible food, it is the Thai people who make this country truly special. Thailand is known as ‘The Land of Smiles’, and that title could not be more fitting. The warmth and friendliness of the locals is something that stays with you long after you’ve left. Even making the smallest effort to speak a few words of Thai, such as greeting someone with a simple “Sawadika” (hello), can spark a genuine connection and might even earn you a lifelong friend.
My Favourite Places in Thailand
Ao Nang
If you’re feeling a little apprehensive about travelling around Thailand, Ao Nang is an excellent place to begin your adventure. Situated in the stunning Krabi province, it serves as a great base for exploring the surrounding islands without the need to pack up and move hotels every few days. From here, you can take day trips to some of Thailand’s most beautiful locations, including the famous Phi Phi Islands and the breathtaking Railay Beach, which is only accessible by boat.
Ao Nang itself has a fantastic mix of lively markets, friendly bars, and stunning coastal scenery, making it an ideal choice for those who want to combine relaxation with exploration. It’s also home to some incredible seafood restaurants, where you can enjoy freshly grilled fish while watching the sun set over the Andaman Sea.
Chiang Mai
While the islands of southern Thailand are undeniably beautiful, the north of the country offers an entirely different experience. One that is rich in culture, history, and stunning natural landscapes. Chiang Mai, in particular, holds a special place in my heart.
This charming city is famous for its bustling night markets, where you can wander through a maze of colourful stalls selling handmade crafts, local delicacies, and beautifully intricate lanterns. The food in Chiang Mai is some of the best I’ve ever tasted, with dishes like Khao Soi (a fragrant coconut curry noodle soup) being an absolute must try.
Beyond the city, you’ll find breathtaking mountain scenery and small villages where you can experience the traditional way of life. One of the highlights of my time in Chiang Mai was visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary, where I had the privilege of observing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. Unlike the unethical elephant attractions that sadly still exist in parts of Thailand, these sanctuaries prioritise the well being of the elephants, allowing visitors to see them up close in a respectful and responsible way.
Top Tips for Making the Most of Thailand
One of the best things about Thailand is how easy it is to explore. Many people stick to just one or two locations, but I would encourage anyone visiting to take the time to travel between different areas. The ferries that connect the islands are incredibly efficient, almost like bus services, making island hopping a straightforward and enjoyable experience. Alternatively, hiring a local driver for the day can be a fantastic way to see places that are off the beaten track. Many drivers are more than happy to share their knowledge of the area and may even take you to their home villages, giving you a rare glimpse into the real Thailand that many tourists don’t get to see.
Another piece of advice I always give to travellers is to avoid all inclusive resorts. While these types of holidays have their place in some destinations, Thailand is best experienced through its incredible street food and family run restaurants. Some of the best meals I’ve ever had were from tiny roadside stalls or unassuming beach huts that didn’t look like much from the outside but served the most flavourful, authentic Thai dishes you can imagine. Not only is the food delicious, but it’s also incredibly affordable, making it easy to eat well on any budget.
Lastly, I always urge travellers to be mindful of ethical tourism, particularly when it comes to animal experiences. As tempting as it might be to book a trip that offers elephant rides or the chance to take a photo with a tiger, it’s important to remember that many of these animals are mistreated behind the scenes. Instead, look for ethical wildlife experiences, such as visiting rescue centres or sanctuaries where the animals are cared for properly and allowed to live as naturally as possible.
Why I’ll Always Go Back to Thailand
Every time I visit Thailand, I fall in love with it all over again. Whether it’s the warmth of the people, the breathtaking landscapes, or the sheer variety of experiences on offer, there is something about this country that captures your heart and keeps you coming back for more.
If you’ve ever considered visiting Thailand, I would absolutely encourage you to go. Whether you want to relax on idyllic beaches, immerse yourself in the country’s rich history and culture, or simply eat your way through some of the best food in the world, Thailand has something for everyone.
