Exploring Malta with Becky
Let's start with honesty shall we? I never thought that Malta could be the place for me, I always thought it was targeted to the older generation, a calm and solemn destination with not much to attract the younger generation. However, I was pleasantly surprised and I couldn't have been any further away from the truth.
Waiting at the gate to board my flight, I couldn't help but notice the vibrant energy around me. There were so many young people travelling, mainly in their 20s to 40s, couples and friends, all excited and ready for their journey. With a flight time of just about three hours, we arrived in no time, greeted by perfect weather, over 30 degrees each day!
The Hotel Experience
We stayed at the AX Odycy Hotel, a 4-star gem in Qawra. Recently refurbished at great expense, the hotel is stunning. We opted for the Bed & Breakfast plan, but upgrades to Half Board Plus or All Inclusive are available. The hotel has a variety of restaurants, three bars, a fantastic pool, and a splash area for children. For those seeking tranquillity, the 11th floor features an adults-only area with breathtaking views across the bay. We stayed in the superior rooms, it was absolutely stunning with the dark interiors making it very spacious and luxurious.
For convenience, I recommend hiring a car, driving in Malta is straightforward as they drive on the same side of the road as us. However, if you prefer not to drive, public transport is easily accessible and efficient from this hotel in particular.
Exciting Excursions
My stay in Malta lasted three nights, and every day was packed with activities. Our first excursion was a trip around the Three Cities with Rolling Geeks, where we drove self-guided electric cars to experience Maltese culture firsthand. This was followed by a private tour of the Inquisitor's Palace, where the torture chambers were particularly eye-opening.
On the second day, we enjoyed a carriage ride around Mdina, followed by wine tasting at Ta' Betta Winery and a tour of Valletta. Fun fact: Mdina served as a filming location for Game of Thrones! We also spent a day viewing Comino by speedboat, taking refreshing dips in the Blue Lagoon. The boat trips are great value, but for a more indulgent experience, consider hiring a private boat. The guides are fantastic and will show you unspoilt areas.
A highlight of my trip was a beautiful picnic on Gozo in a private villa offering stunning views over the Blue Lagoon. We were also fortunate to have a private viewing of St. John's Co-Cathedral, where we were stunned by the artwork and striking gold designs, accompanied by a moving musical performance. Our final day included a visit to the Blue Grotto and the Hagar Qim, a limestone temple dating back to 3700 BC.
Culinary Delights
Malta's culinary scene is impressive. We dined like royalty throughout our stay, experiencing one of Malta’s six Michelin-starred restaurants in Marsaxlokk, which was out of this world. Maltese delicacies include sweet honey desserts, creamy cheeses, homemade olive oil, and savoury pastries. My favourite dining spot was Gracy's Art and Supper Club, where we enjoyed a meal on the outdoor terrace with a beach club vibe.
Overall Impressions
Malta is a destination I would recommend to everyone; couples, families, young groups, and lively guests. St. Julian’s is a fantastic alternative to Ibiza, and Valletta is perfect for a city break.
Malta also has a thriving music scene, so be sure to check out ‘Visit Malta’ for upcoming lineups. The island is impeccably clean, and the locals are incredibly friendly. Whether you’re looking to explore and sightsee or simply relax by the pool, Malta offers the best of both worlds.
If you're planning your next vacation, Malta should be at the top of your list. The combination of rich history, vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine ensures a memorable experience for all.
