Carolyn’s Signature Voyage with Hurtigruten - Norway Cruise To The Arctic Circle
Our Retail Store Manager, Carolyn Markey, just had a bucket-list experience on an all inclusive Norwegian adventure with Hurtigruten. The 6-night Signature Voyage from Oslo to Tromsø did not disappoint, and she simply couldn’t wait to tell you all about it!
Day 1 - Journey To Norway & Embarkation
I had return flights from Manchester and embarked straight onto the ship after arriving in Oslo. Staying aboard the MS Trollfjord, I had a Superior Ocean View cabin, and it had a lovely cosy feel to it. MS Trollfjord has 3 restaurants (Flora, Arran and Rost), a 2 storey Bar called 1893, and a sauna & fitness room. Plus, there's free Wi-Fi so that you can make everyone at home jealous with all the things your doing! The ship has plenty of lounges, so overall there was a great relaxed atmosphere, and there's plenty for everyone to do onboard. There was a beautiful sunset that evening, and, after taking it all in, I retired to my cabin to relax and ready myself for the adventure.
Day 2 - Start At The South Cape
I opened my eyes and we were already docked in the fifth largest city in Norway, Kristiansand. What better way to explore this vibrant city than by taking an expert-led excursion around the South Cape. I started off my day in Skoddeland Winery. Here we watched the traditional artistry of basket weaving before testing out the sparkling white wine and apple cider. It was delicious, even if it was 10am! But hey, it’s 5’o’clock somewhere right?!
I then visited the oldest working lighthouse in Norway, first lit in 1656, Lindesnes Lighthouse. After climbing to the very top, I was mesmorised by views of the vast blue ocean speckled lined by a neverending coastline of craggy coves. For lunch I had the pleasure of visiting the only underwater restaurant in Europe (and the largest in the world!), named Under. Inspired by the ocean that surrounds it, this was a truly immersive dining experience. The food is inspired by traditional Norwegian cuisine and is all seasonally chosen.
After heading back to the ship, I enjoyed a lovely evening meal in the restaurant Flora. Indulging in pickled haddock, followed by cod and new potatoes and finishing off with a crème brûlee, I went to my cabin that night extremely satisfied.
Day 3 - Fjords Scenic Cruising
Despite this being a sea day, there was no way you could be bored. I spent my time taking in the spectacular views as we sailed through the mesmerising fjords of Hardangerfjorden, they towered above as the ship sailed through small gaps, it felt like they were close enough to reach out and touch.
You could also take part in lots of fun activities such as beer tasting and fascinating lectures on Marine Life and Conservation. This evening I had the delight of dining in the restaurant Arran. After eating a delicious ribeye steak, I spent some time relaxing in the bar. It had a really great atmosphere and there was a singer every night who was great fun. They interacted with the passengers and even took song requests!
Day 4 - Ålesund & The Saga Islands
After a hearty breakfast, I was fueled up for my trip around Ålesund. I decided to take a Saga Islands bus tour to Alnes. First stop was the Saga Island of Giske, where vikings once roamed and was home to one of Norway’s most powerful families. Then it was off to the quaint fishing village of Alnes where I took another steep climb up the lighthouse. And oh was it worth it! With views of breathtaking rolling green hills, this is something not to be missed. Temperatures were now at -1°C so I was happy to spend the afternoon relaxing on the ship and spending yet another night watching the golden rays of the sun slowly disappear into the ocean, with marine life teeming just below the surface.
Day 5 - Brønnøysund
I woke up in another quaint Norwegian town, Brønnøysund, with lots of options for activities. You could do a walking tour, kayaking, or several bus tour options. I decided to soak up all the stunning scenery I could and opted for the walking tour.
Famous for amazing sights, such as Torghatten Mountain (with a hole pierced in its centre), I savoured all the natural beauty in front of me. Sailing to the Arctic Circle this afternoon, I decided this was the perfect time to enjoy the sauna. And boy was it the right choice as we had the Arctic Circle Baptism this evening. This was a ceremony where the captain and another crew member threw ice down your back. Talk about a baptism of fire… well ice! Let’s just say I was definitely accimated, and ready for the cold temperatures of the Arctic Circle. For now, it was time to get in my cosy warm bed.
Day 6 - Lofoten Islands
Waking up in Svolvær felt like waking up in the middle of a Christmas card. It had crisp, pure white snow-covered mountains everywhere you turned. All so very picturesque and undisturbed. You could definitely tell we were closer to the Arctic Circle now and the air was cool and fresh.
Today I visited the Lofoten Islands where there were lots of different things to do. You can go Kayaking, sample the RIB & Sea Eagle Experience, Winter Fishing, Mountain Hiking and Snowshoeing to name a few. I went for the Sea Eagle experience, and I don't think I've ever got so up close and personal with wildlife!
Day 7 - Tromsø & Homeward Bound
My journey ended in Tromsø and I woke up to more beautiful crisp snowy mountains, which made leaving even harder. The ship was continuing on to Bergen but unfortunately this was my last stop. After another fantastic Norwegian breakfast of ginger shots and smoothies, it was off to the airport for my direct flight home to Manchester.
What a trip!
I would certainly recommend Hurtigruten and I would love to sail with them again. The staff were so friendly, the ship was much more plush then I expected with plenty of lounges and low key entertainment. The food was delicious and there was so much choice - it is all fresh from the local regions with locally paired wines. I really liked how the ship had a relaxed and personal feel to it and because of Hurtigruten’s expert knowledge we were able to visit lesser known ports and see the ‘real’ Norway.
