Carolyn's Trip To West Coast Florida

Following our fantastic win at the TTG Top 50 Awards, Travel Village Branch Manager, Carolyn accepted a trip to Florida in June 2023. Now, we know that you can't truly visit Florida without experiencing at least one theme park, but VisitFlorida also wanted Carolyn to experience the lesser-known West Coast.
With a jam-packed schedule filled with adventures, hotel-visits and experiences, this was going to be a trip to remember!

2-night stay at Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort
Hotel site visits: Universal's Aventura Hotel, Loews Sapphire Falls Resort, and Hard Rock Hotel Universal
Experiences: Full day at Universal - VIP Tour of Universal Studios Florida & Universal's Islands of Adventure; and the morning at Universal's Volcano Bay
Dining Out: Strong Water Tavern at Loews Sapphire Falls Resort (rum specialist & ceviche bar), and Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen.

Carolyn's Top Tips for Universal

What a fantastic place for anyone that loves theme parks & water parks! Universal's hotels are easily reached with complimentary water taxis and buses, or even on foot. Staying in a Universal hotel also ensures you have early entry to the parks, so your favourite rides can be experienced before the queues can start. I would definitely recommend the Express Pass as they really do cut that queue time and ensure you can appreciate all the rides.
If you are travelling in the summer months I would recommend a few relaxing days by the pool, or visit Volcano Bay, so you can have some relaxation. I found that the humidity can really take it out of you.
Hiring a car is not necessary due to the complimentary transport, but it is something that would give you a bit more freedom

2-night stay at Bradenton - Silver Surf Gulf Beach Resort on Anna Maria Island
Experiences: Private boat tour with Anna Maria Banana Boat Rides; 1-hour boat tour with Paradise Boat Tours (possible to see Manatees!); free time to explore Bridge Street and Pine Avenue
Dining Out: Dinner at Compass Hotel Anna Maria Sound; breakfast at Gulf Drive Cafe; lunch on the beach provided by Graze Street; dinner at the Beach House Restaurant; breakfast at The Chateau Anna Maria.

Carolyn's Experiences in Bradenton

What a fabulous destination! I had no idea what to expect, and I was blown away by the Gulf Coast from the white sandy beaches, the beautiful blue sea, and the friendly people. We experienced 2 boat trips around the bay, and were lucky enough to see lots of dolphins!
We had a fabulous meal whilst watching the sunset... when does that ever get old?!
The Surf Side Inn, whilst a motel, was simply perfect. The rooms were stunning; the location on the beach was second to none; and the staff were outstanding. I would return in a heartbeat! There were a few local shops, bars and restaurants - fresh fish being a speciality in the area.

2-night stay at Tampa - JW Marriott & Marriot Water Street
Experiences: Ybor City (Latin Quarter) walking tour; TECO streetcar; Tampa Riverwalk with a museum visit; pour-your-own candle experience at The Candle Pour
Dining Out: Dinner at AMerican Social Restaurant; breakfast at Datz; lunch at #16 Armature Works; dinner on the Cruise Yacht Starship.

Carolyn's Impressions of Tampa

I had no idea what to expect from Tampa. It's a stunning city with a heavy Spanish & Cuban feel to it. If you like outdoor living in a cosmopolitan city with lots of parks, shops, bars, coffee shops and nightlife, then this place is for you. The hotels are first class, and very central to the Cruise Terminal and harbour (I could have easily stayed longer!). We were lucky enough to do a walking tour of the Ybor City area, escorted by a gentleman who really brought Tampa to life from its early origins and huge cigar manufacturing history. The Latin Quarter has seen huge development, and is now known for its business centre, museums and other cultural offerings. I absolutely loved the Aquarium!! And, if you haven't had your fill of thrills and spills, Busch Gardens is only a 15-minute ride away!

All in all, I feel like my eyes have been truly opened to what's available in Florida. It's not just themeparks, aligators & Everglades, shopping and space exploration... there's so much more on offer!
